The distinguished British historian Jane Priestland, editor of Records Of Iraq, 1914-1966, says: I have no doubt at all that the British government had advance knowledge of the coup.

There are documents in existence, that have not been released, that would substantiate this.

When, in October 2006, she made a Freedom of Information request for the release of these documents, it was refused by the Foreign Office on the grounds that this could increase the instability in an already volatile area of the world .

King Faisal s body was buried in strict secrecy at the Hashemite royal cemetery in Adhamiya, north of Baghdad.

And there it lay virtually forgotten for 21 years, until Saddam Hussein seized power in 1979, the point at which this week s television series began.

To the astonishment of his entourage, Saddam, the new President of Iraq, began to make secret visits to King Faisal s tomb. On some occasions, he remained inside the royal mausoleum for more than an hour.
