Dear Noor

It is hard to generalize as in saying -western feminism-. If we are debating from an academic and political viewpoint, western feminism has more than one school of thought, starting from the far-right wing conservative Christian feminism (such as Sarah Palins), going to Liberal Feminism, and finally come the leftist feminists.

Therefore, some western feminist schools agree with your positions which give way to religion and tradition while subordinate womens (and mens) freedoms.

If we refer to the academic labeling, our movements feminism treads between what is labeled as Marxist feminism and Socialist feminism, while sharing some grounds with Radical Feminisms analysis of the social role of patriarchy.

Some traditional leftistsare still in dismay of using the term -feminists- to describe socialist or communist woman activists, as they are still stuck in a frozen period of feminist tendency. They refer to a specific feminist liberation movement in America which split from the left in the seventies of the twentieth century and defied communism.

With the global rejuvenation of women activism in the new millennium, the term feminism was reclaimed by women from the left who no longer acknowledge the credibility of the divide between political leftist struggle and feminist struggle.

In brief, the feminism we claim is not a western one. Our mothers generation demonstrated in the streets of Baghdad to demand more or less the same rights sixty years ago.

Do not believe the Islamists and patriarchal male-chauvinists who try to distort the realities about the modern history of Iraq and the region.

The left as an ideology and politicalsocial practice was the source of womens freedoms, and not the west.
