Marcel khalifa is a very famous artist from Lebanon; he is known and need not somebody to write on him because even his enemies confess his unique artistic procedure.
First , I would liked like to clarify something related to the title which I have chosen to this text , in fact ,selecting that title from dozens is not something spontaneous but it is an aware choice . Marcel khalifa is more powerful to be linked only to one place or even to a limited time. artists like him although they are those who reflect their age honestly in the sometime they must contain something special ;something from the inner constituents of some holly creators such as prophets and angels The couran book has talked about angles to be created from light whereas humans are produced from clay if this statement can be true I’m sure that Mr Marcel will be no less than a master of angels .
The sense of light in the Arab culture and even in the world’s is related to peace an calmness .in fact Marcel is the most important artist who reflects this sense of peace in his work via singing the wonderful poems of a great other progressive Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish .A peace that equals the blood of thousands and thousands of Palestinians against the Nazi Zionist colonisation , all in all, it is a peace which is based on popular resistance and not that false and reactionist version that is presented to the people by a narrow circle of traitors from saddat to abbas, in one word peace means freedom and equality .
Besides Marcel in his songs and symphonies registers the Palestinian cause sacrifices and trough it the struggle of the oppressed classes in all over the world against Zionism and imperialism .No one can forget ‘‘ Ahmed Al Arabi ’’ and martyr Mohamed Jamal Addora ; who will be registered along centuries in human’s memory via Marcel’s song on him and many many others who uncover the brutality of the Zionist and imperialist enemy to the world .
Above , I have mentioned in brief some points of Marcel ‘s work content , then , the artistic perspective/ stand point is worth to be discussed .the first point is that listening to Marcel’s songs ( Rita, monadilon, ikhtartok ya watani , yousuf ya abi ,…..)And many other songs with ‘‘almayadin orchestra’’ and the talented great singer omaima alkhalil (? osfor tal mni shibak, ilhilwa…..) And many symphonies (sharq/east , al jisr ….) makes the listener believe strongly in the corruption of the famous reactionist and bourgeois view ‘‘art for art sake’’. Marcel sings and composes music along his life defending Palestinians and supporting their cause , this kind of relationship between him and the cause of ruled classes against the rule does not mean as some paid intellectuals attempting to say that he sacrifices the aesthetic dimension of the work , I remember one of Orwell’s quotes about this issue “Using the word ‘political’ in the widest possible sense. Desire to push the world in a certain direction, to alter other peoples’ idea of the kind of society that they should strive after. Once again, no book is genuinely free from political bias. The opinion that art should have nothing to do with politics is itself a political attitude.’’ What can be added to Orwell’s clarification is that this attitude can be generalized to the other sorts of art and not only writing, Marcel stresses this idea when he says in his letter to Palestinians in the year 2002 ‘‘ if I had power , I would destroy death before it touches you .if I had power ,I would slay death , and would keep you safe inside my bosom .but all I can do is record your actions , and humbly walk the earth , singing your chronicle .perhaps I could add one more syllable to the epic of joy that began when your bodies roared ….’’ Yes, as any one can realize Marcel is always modest despite his perfectness.
these are humble lines on a great internationalist artist, all what we can say at the end is a small sentence while we are standing up altogether long live Marcel khalifa the creator of beauty.
