Don t you find it obnoxious these ads in the Egyptian TV promoting the whitening lotions and creams?! I don t think there are similar ads in a western country that has a majority of dark skinned population like our region does (and kindly correct me if the term dark skinned is not politically correct cause I don t know another one). I don t think they dare to show similar ads in the US for instance, where the dark skinned version of the girl is looking down with a grim and the white version of the same girl has a wide smile with lights, fame and glamour surrounding her! Example, in Egypt, the country that has a dark skinned majority and a vast Nubian population in the south, has not one black movie star woman or man, all white with dyed yellow hair and colored contacts! The lotions are in the pharmacies and it is every woman or man s free choice to use it, but to portray the difference between the lives of a dark skinned person and that of a white skinned person as it is the difference between failure and success and on national TV is preposterous. I don t know, may be a lighter skin color specially in women is more appealing to a majority of people or has a wider range of acceptance, cause I noticed that even in the US some black actresses tend to whiten their skin color, you ll rarely find a dark black actress on the contrary to actors, a celebrity example: Oprah Winphry, just take a look on her skin color in her early shows and her skin color now, on a scale of 1 to 10 the white being 1 and the black being 10, she was a 10 and became 3. It is very obvious that they use whitening lotions even in the US but they dare not speak, but it does not make our degrading ads any less obnoxious. Another thing, the linking between the beauty of a woman and her ability to find the job of her choice! With a flow of her new shiny hair she can get any job she wants, even as a journalist! This is hilarious! What kind of impression are they trying to give women, that they re nothing but brainless shiny dolls! I can hear some men approving. Preposterous.
