Welcome to Aleppo, the epicenter of the Syrian Civil War, where the battlefield is less a place for military tactics and more a stage for a geopolitical El Clá-;-sico—a ruthless and absurd showdown between some of the most dys-function-al teams ever assembled. On one side, you’ve got Al-Qaeda and the remains of ISIS, two groups that really should be working together but seem more interested in arguing over who gets to ruin the neighborhood first. These self-proclaimed saviors of the "revolution" (seriously, they call themselves that) have formed the Sunni Revolution Organization—a coalition of zealots, each with their own vision of what a perfect, post-apocalyptic society might look like. Spoiler: it involves a lot of destruction and very little in the way of actual governance. Then, on the other side, we have the seasoned professionals: Assad s loyalist thugs, the real all-stars of the war crime Olympics. These guys have been in the business of mass murder and oppression for years, and now they re busy arguing about whose war crimes are classier. Is it more stylish to barrel-bomb civilians´-or-to use chemical weapons? Tough call. As this “clash of the titans” unfolds, it becomes increasingly clear that the real winner here is… well, nobody. The prize is not control over Aleppo´-or-any kind of lasting peace. The prize, it seems, is absolute societal collapse. Because in the world of these warring factions, who needs a -function-al society when you’ve got rubble, chaos, and an endless stream of civilians caught in the crossfire? And just when you think this farce couldn’t get any more absurd, in strolls Russia, acting like the exasperated coach who’s seen it all before. “Alright, break it up, back to Turkey with you lot,” Russia mutters, waving its hands in a dismissive gesture as if to say, “I can’t even with this anymore.” This is where geopolitics starts to resemble a reality TV show—Survivor: Middle East Edition, where the rules don’t apply and the only goal is to survive long enough to get to the next round of destruction. So, if you re looking for a story about heroism and moral clarity in Aleppo, you’re in the wrong place. What you’ll find instead is a tragicomic spectacle of rival factions fighting not for victory, but for the privilege of being the last ones standing in a destroyed city. In this battle, everyone’s a loser, and the real casualty is the future of a once-proud city.
