Masoud Mohammad wrote: It s as if the student has surpassed the master. At the moment when a prestigious Lebanese media outlet like MTV is accused of deceit by "Hezbollah," it becomes evident that the Supreme Leader followed by the party in Iran has a long history of arresting journalists and activists due to escalating political and social tensions. Iran s denial of freedom of speech and thorough inquiry mirrors the actions of the party based on its own standards.
It s worth noting that Iran is one of the countries witnessing severe restrictions on freedom of expression and press freedom, with periodic monitoring and suppression of journalistic activities.
Multiple journalists and activists have been arrested in recent years.
The list of journalists who have been arrested in Iran includes:
Rouhollah Zam: He was a prominent Iranian journalist who worked for several independent media outlets. He was arrested in 2019 on charges of "participating in activities against the regime" and was sentenced to imprisonment for several years, leading to his execution.
Masoumeh Amini: She worked as a correspondent for various independent Iranian media outlets. She was arrested in 2019 and was charged with spreading false news and participating in activities against the regime. She was also sentenced to imprisonment.
Zahra Mohammadi: An Iranian journalist and activist covering human rights issues. She has been arrested multiple times due to her journalistic and social activities. She faced charges such as "propaganda against the regime," "incitement to unrest," and "threatening national security."
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe: A German-Iranian journalist who worked for several international media outlets. She was arrested in 2019 on charges of espionage and collaborating with a foreign state against Iran. She was sentenced to several years in prison.
These are just a few examples of journalists and activists who have been arrested in Iran. It s important to note that cases of detention and persecution in Iran regularly occur and may be linked to escalating political and social events in the country.
Re-arrest of Nazila Maroufi
Recalling the previous events, it is within the context of the re-arrest of Iranian journalist Nazila Maroufi, 48 hours after her release according to a US-based human rights organization.
She was initially arrested for conducting an interview with the father of Mahsa Amini, which triggered widespread protests in Iran following her death. In the interview, Mahsa Amini s father accused the authorities of lying about the circumstances of her death, after she was arrested on charges related to improper veiling.
Nazila Maroufi was released from Evin Prison in Tehran, a notorious women s prison, and posted a photo of herself without a veil on social media platforms as a challenge to Iran s strict dress code for women.
Just two days after her release, Nazila Maroufi was re-arrested and transferred to "Qarchak" prison, known for its poor conditions and accusations of human rights violations. This information was confirmed by a source close to her family.
It s worth noting that Iranian authorities claimed that Mahsa Amini died due to a health issue, while her family and human rights activists asserted that she was beaten during her detention.
Nazila Maroufi works as a journalist in Tehran. She was previously arrested and sentenced to five years in prison, with another five years suspended, after being convicted of "propaganda against the regime and spreading false news." She was released in July but was re-arrested. She is currently on trial for "national security violations."
