International Federation of Iraqi Refugees
2007 / 4 / 17
To: Ban Ki-Moon General Secretary of the United Nations
And Participants of the UNHCR Conference
17 April 2007
I am writing on behalf of the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees to all participants of the UNHCR conference 17th and 18th April 2007. We urge the UNHCR and other organizations to support and help Iraqi refugees who are suffering in terrible conditions in Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran etc.
The current situation in Iraq is the result of an illegal war waged on Iraq by the USA and UK which the majority of citizens in the USA, UK and worldwide opposed. The occupiers have not handled the aftermath of the war adequately. We are witnessing a non-functional government in Iraq which is unable to provide security and public services for the Iraqi people. Sectarian violence is increasing, and we are seeing disturbing images of the civilian population of Iraq suffering in terrible conditions. Iraqi civilians are being killed on a daily basis and more than four million Iraqis have been forced to leave Iraq.
The US and UK Governments have a huge responsibility for improving the situation of the Iraqi people. Moreover, the occupiers should solve the issue of Iraqi refuges. The UNHCR should provide shelter and food for the Iraqi refugees that have been forced into neighbouring countries, by so doing enabling the Iraqi refugees to lead a normal life.
We ask that UNCHR action the following demands:
1- Establish a committee made up of Human Rights organizations and NGO’s. This committee should be supported by the UN. The committee should seek to provide the following for Iraqi refugees adequate housing, ensure they are fed, access to health care and education. The International Federation of Iraqi Refuges is willing to work with other NGO’s to help establish this committee.
2- Open a Monetary Fund which will be financed by the UNCHR to secure the lives of the Iraqi refuges.
3- Request the neighbouring countries treat the Iraqi refuges with dignity and respect.
4- Recognize Iraq as an unsafe country and seek to stop European Countries deporting Iraqi refugees.
5- Help and support those organizations which work to improve the situation inside Iraq.
6- Campaign to grant asylum to those Iraqis who are in neighbouring countries, EU countries or the country of their choice.
We call on this conference to improve the lives of the Iraqi refugees. IFIR will do all it can to help implement the above demands.
We believe that Iraq is an occupied country and the occupiers are the source of the instability in Iraq. The occupation should be ended and security should be provided for the whole of Iraq.
