The uprising is still alive though the numbers of the participants in the Squares are less than before. “Despite the rain and the Corona threats, we are here and never retreat”-;- that is what the students chanted in Tahrir Square -Baghdad today.
There were students’ demonstrations in main squares of Baghdad, Basra, Nasrya, Babylon and other cities. They chanted slogans such as-;- “We do not retreat and stay defending the square” and “we will increase pressure by going to have a general students’ strike”.
The students and large crowds of different ages participated in the demonstration of today (25th of Feb) which has been called for in memorizing the start of the wave of popular demonstrations on 25th of 2011.
One of the important features of the ongoing uprising (intifada) in Iraq is the ever-increasing number of women especially female students taking part actively in the uprising. This shows that the intifada has made a major crack in the rule of political Islam, consequently, signs of a revolutionary situation have already emerged.
Students are more organized than before and have acquired the ability to oragnise their protests and demos effectively on almost a daily base. Women are eager to embrace the literature that defends their rights and liberties and become involved strongly in almost all the demonstrations. For instance, Nisa el intifada (women’s’ of the uprising) a daily two pages’ paper are distributed in the squares of Baghdad, Najaf and Diwania and circulated relatively widely on social media.
The workers are part of these developments. They have increased their struggles for immediate demands and supported in different ways the intifada.
Some sections among the most determined young freedom fighters in the squares have come to conclusion that they need to be organized and to co-ordinate between themselves. The young unemployed workers are already a major force in the uprising.
The damage that has been done to political Islam and the whole ethnos – sectarian regime, their grip of power and their control over the plight of the people, is huge. This damage can’t be fixed easily. They are more divided than ever and their alternative to make government by their choice Mohamed Tawfiq Alawi, has deepened their disagreements still more. They are in a deep political crisis and can’t escape from it soon.
So far, the political line of intifada is on a progressive course as it does not accept compromise with the militia corrupt regime in Iraq. The uprising wants to bring down the whole regime. It is against both the US and Iran and have risen its voice against the nationalists and the Baathists. Intifada has buried the sectarian sentiments and politics and with the participation of women it has become an arena for major changes.
We are going through one of the most important stages of the political and ideological changes in Iraq. A noticeable change in the balance of power between the classes in Iraq has already taken place. If these developments could go ahead without major disruptions, then we are already in a revolutionary crisis phase.
The possibility of this phase to develop into a fully revolutionary situation and finally a revolution depends on socialist proletariat political and organisational ability to rise to the occasion.
