WHEN THE PRESIDENT IS STUCK

Nobody can deny that there is a big movement currently taking place in Egyptian society. A lot of cases and discussions are occurring, for example; we have the constitutional amendments, and changes for article 34, which should be finished by April. We also have the citizenship principle, which was proposed by Mubarak, in the constitutional amendments. We have the Muslim Brothers and the secret organization responsible for assonating their opponents. We have the demonstration of Al-Azhar students wearing combat uniforms and dressed as militiamen. We have the discovery of money laundering by the Muslim Brothers’ companies. We have the state refusing political parties based on religious roots. We have the spy, a former student of Al-Azhar. In addition, we have the daily suffering of the Egyptian citizens because of the great cost due to Hepatitis C and the infected blood bags. We have attempts by the Copts to put an end to the religious country through the 2nd article of the Constitution, which came by Sada in 1980: “Islam is the formal religion of the state and Islamic law is the main source of legislation.”

All these issues made Egyptian society in constant motion. The intellectuals who participate with their opinions cannot make a change. The Muslim Brothers battle to establish the Islamic state “so that a Malaysian or a Turkish man can be the governor of Egypt.” A depressed people, who are just watching and waiting for the results - maybe one day it will be for their own interests.

Based on my knowledge of the Middle East and Mr. Mubarak during his 25-year reign, I can tell that he is stuck. As a result, it is going to add up to nothing – the result for all these actions in newspapers, TV, and Parliament is known in advance and they are:
CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS
Constitutional Amendments will be surface changes that serve only one goal, which is to keep the regime and all its members and mistakes safe. What is happening now will end with nothing. The whole regime will stay, starting with Kamal al-Shazly, Saffat al-Sherif, Mustaffa Alffaki, and the rest of the regime figures.

THE MUSLIM BROTHERS AND THE REGIME
The Muslim Brothers will keep a low profile for the time being, and they will continue their activities underground until they once again have the chance to seize power. If this does not happen during Mubarak’s reign, it will be during the next President’s reign. The regime will make a truce with them in return for compromises. Take, for example, the last election: The regime started that already by releasing the students of Al-Azhar University although they attacked the Dean’s office after their military demonstration, “as they are worried about the future.” This is despite that Prosecutor’s earlier statements in AlMasry Alyom newspaper on Feb. 20th, that the charges the students were facing could hold a punishment of up to 10 years in prison. With the Muslim Brothers working underground, they will gain the loyalty of new leaders in security or the NDP, judges, or the old figures of the government like Kamal al-Shazly, or Saffat al-Sherif. Both of them will be the means for the Muslim Brothers to seek control of Egypt.

The money of the Muslim Brothers will be released and the Muslim Brothers will once again rearrange themselves to become more powerful and to guarantee that they are going to reach their ultimate goal. Their slogan for the current security attacks is “Attacks which will not kill us are going to make us stronger.” They are like a chameleon taking all colors: political, religious, or social; just to reach their ultimate goal and seize power so that their leader, Mahdy Akef, will be Caliph of Egypt.

THE SUFFERING OF THE EGYPTIAN CITIZEN
The regime will work hard to end the hunger of the Egyptian people using a lot of talking, press releases, statements, and arguments. All of the government facilities and media will be devoted to that so that the people will live in a fantasy world, while the privileged continue to prey on the blood of the people who are also suffering from the Muslim Brothers. The regime will also continue to falsely accuse the honest Copts by things like cooperation with Israel. The example of Al-Azhar ex-student still stands: it is just a joke to distract the Egyptian people from important issues.

COPTS AND CITIZENSHIP
The regime will not be able to provide true citizenship as long as the 2nd article of the constitution is still there. The regime will kneel down to the mob because it is too weak to face them, using the help of Fathy Sorour, the National Committee, the Muslim Brothers newspapers, and government loyal Copts like Bebawi and Assad. Citizenship will be just an article like an accessory in the constitution, like so many other articles contradictory articles in the Egyptian constitution. Examples: 3, 46, 40, 73; all these articles are not effective.

Finally, I tried to pick a title like “The Government is Stuck,” because the Parliament should have the upper hand in the amendments. But, I believe that it is a one-man show. The President controls it all, so it was more meaningful to say “The President is Stuck” to describe his situation in the process of proposed amendments to the Constitution.

Finally, the people will not benefit in the end. Egypt is not going to change as long as military dictator minds that cooperate with devils are still in power. They don’t know that whoever plays with fire will get burned. President Sadat is a good example – he made a truce with the Muslim Brothers and finally they paid him back.

So, congratulations to the President, toamal al-Shazly, and many others. My condolences to the people of Egypt, who will benefit nothing from these amendments.

We should also mention that each President was stuck with a different issue. Gamal Abdel Nasser was stuck with the issue of Arab nationalism, Sadat was stuck being the ‘eliever’President who gave life to the political Islam, and we have our current President, who only cares about remaining in power while Egypt – along with its kind, oppressed people – is one that loses everything.
