	Don’t forget who we are
Poem by: Thaaira Shamun Al - Bazi
Translated by : Freeyad Ibrahim
******************************
( Don’t Forget Who We Are…)
I speak today and my voice is furious
Because the burden turned unbearable,
exceeded the limit
It is time to tell the world
they
Want to distort my essence
Plot to erase ,efface and wipe out my features
They destroy all my pulpits
To kill all my dreams
Yesterday one of them denied us
While standing upon the ruins of my civilization
And said to the world :
My features and landmarks collapsed and turned to dust
And announced he is the King of the Time
And pretended to have forgotten that a day shall come
When the earth will shake
And everything might turn upside down
And then the history will swallow his litigations
And the history is going to come back to its people and its glory
As for me
I say enough it be with your infidelity and tyranny
For the sons of Sumer, Babylon and Ashur have endured it
enormously
So don’t belittle us nor underrate us
even if they outnumbered us
For the victory is not gained by number
Number won’t avail
Victory is attained by mind , intellect and faith
**************************************
Today a bit of news arrived
Shook the blood within my entity
They cancelled My Rights
Because I am a minority
Never, we never have been and never would be
A minority
We are…. the origin don’t forget this,
keep it in mind
We….are the ones who taught the mankind;
how writing and reading could be
We….are the ones who enacted the laws
And legislated how the rights are not for sale
We … are the people who discovered the secrets of all science and knowledge.
And treated the malady …with remedy
We are…those who deciphered the riddle
and decoded the mystery of the universe
by means of mathematics
And made the mud and the rock emit breaths
We are…those who built houses and erected mansions
Who built cities
and founded civilizations
We …are the people
who protected their soil with their intrepid army
We..are the ones who spread justice and peace
And who let the enemy taste bitterness
We didn’t come to you from overseas
We are the sons of Sumer, of Babylon and Ashur
We are the people of this land
And the owners of this property;
It is our rightful possession
We are born here and shall die here
******************************
Our civilization testifies our existence
Our relics and our sculptures speak for and about us
They tell of our knowledge, our faith ,and our strength
I say unto you:
you are too weak to deny me
For our fingerprints
We left upon every corner , nook and niche
And we carved our names on all the tablets
In Sumerian, Acadian, and Assyrian cuneiform letters
No land is free from my hands’ planting
Nor city is void of my constructions
No library is free from the knowledge of my thoughts
That is because in the house of every Iraqi I live
And in the mind of every Iraqi I dwell
And if an Iraqi one day wants to be proud
I shall find him sing the love songs
about my forefathers’ glories
The glories and grace of Sumer and its beauty
Babylon and its laws
Ashur and its grandeur
How do you deny me ?
While I am engraved in the religion books
For we don’t make history
And we won’t fabricate fictions
We are part of this being,
And even though the events banished, expelled and dispersed us
We are going to come back
And we shall prove once more
to those who pretends to have forgotten
That the right cannot be usurped from their owners
And however hard you attempt to wipe out the facts,
Even though you tear up all volumes
And bury all sites
Yet there are many left that cry
In all spots
Then tell me: what fact do you aim to eliminate ?
Have you forgotten that there are much of it
Which neither your hands nor your minds can reach?
For we exist not underground
But we do exist above it
Since the eternity
With loftiness, dignity, and glory of my past
And I won’t agree to be a slave girl
In my Fatherland, Iraq
I am rather the owner of the house!
